Adobe's financial report was mixed

Adobe's revenue and profit in the third quarter both exceeded market expectations. Its AI business grew rapidly. However, the company's fourth-quarter performance guidance was weak. Coupled with the personnel shake-up, the company's stock price closed slightly lower in the after-hours trading session.

Adobe's financial report was mixed

The third quarter financial report exceeded all expectations.

Adobe's most recent third-quarter financial report shows the company brought in $6.76 billion in revenue for the period, which was higher than the $6.7 billion analysts had expected. The profit part was also impressive with adjusted earnings per share at $6.13, a smidgen above the market expectation of $6.09. The core driving force of this round of growth is the AI intelligent upgrading of all products.
The data shows that the annual recurring revenue of the company's AI-related products has doubled year-on-year, with a very fast growth momentum. The use of AI functions has largely enhanced the competitiveness of the company's products and addressed the market concerns that existed previously. Many investors fretted that new AI design tools would siphon users away from Adobe's traditional software. However, the surprisingly strong revenue numbers this quarter suggest that the company is holding on to its core business.

Guidance for the fourth quarter came in below expectations.

The third quarter was good but the real short-term driver of the stock price was the disappointing fourth-quarter revenue outlook. This was the principal reason for the stock price decline after the financial report was released. Adobe offered a revenue range for the fourth quarter of $6.8 billion to $6.85 billion, a little below the $6.85 billion Wall Street was expecting. These early prices from the funds sparked after-hours selling that knocked Adobe's stock price down 1.9% in the extended trading session.
This conservative performance outlook has caused the market to re-evaluate Adobe's position in the industry. Currently, the competition in AI design is getting more and more fierce. One of the key differentiators is the lightweight and low-cost advantages of platforms like Figma and Canva that are iterating their products and taking market share. Investors are starting to worry that the speed of Adobe's AI transformation may not be able to offset the growth pressure brought by external competition, and the future profit space will be limited.

There has been a series of significant changes in the management team.

Apart from the performance differences, the recent major management changes at Adobe have also become an important emotional factor suppressing the stock price. The company has appointed Anil Chakravarthy to take over the position of new CEO, and the appointment will officially take effect on December 1st. In addition, the financial director resigned and joined Micron Technology in June this year. The president of Creative and Productivity Business also stepped down in late September. The market has a wait-and-see attitude towards the company's subsequent strategy, and investors are reluctant to blindly go long.
In the past, Adobe firmly held a monopoly position in the industry with its professional and comprehensive software system, and had a stable user base and revenue sources. But now, there are many lightweight AI design tools emerging. The threshold of content creation is very low. Many small and medium-sized businesses are replacing paid Adobe software with cheaper newer AI design tools. It's a blow to Adobe's legacy subscription business. The company stabilized its third-quarter performance by embedding AI functions, but the intensification of industry competition is a long-term trend.
The current divergence between the bulls and the bears in Adobe's stock is very clear. The core support logic of the bulls is that the company's AI business has experienced explosive growth, with a stable user base, and there is no risk of performance collapse in the short term. The core concerns of the bears are concentrated in three points. First, the fourth-quarter performance guidance is weak, and short-term growth is lackluster. Second, the industry competition is intensifying, and there is a risk that market share will be diverted. Third, there have been significant changes in the management team, and the future strategy is uncertain.
